Which skills are you most proud of? Some may be more valuable than you might think.

When employers search for top-notch employees, they seek out people with a wide range of skills — some of which might surprise you. Employers look for both hard skills and soft skills.

Hard Skills

Hard SkillsHard skills are those that we learn in school or can be measured. They can be quantified and proven. Some may even be backed up by documentation. Speaking different languages, knowing how to do welding or plumbing, having a nursing degree – these are all hard skills.

Hard skills are listed on job postings. Clearly outline any matching skills on your resume. These hard skills should also be listed in your cover letter. In addition to the above-mentioned examples, list any certifications, additional training, or awards you have received.

Most job seekers emphasize their hard skills when assessing their value as an employee. But your skills don’t stop there. You also have valuable soft skills. These are traits that are harder to quantify but that can give you the edge over other candidates.

Soft Skills

Soft Skills

Soft Skills

Soft skills can be listed on a resume but they come across more clearly in the personal interview. These traits are often intangible, but invaluable. Good communication skills, highly motivated, team player, problem solver – these are examples of soft skills.

They’re harder to prove on paper. But they can make or break your chances for getting a job. Tell the hiring manager about your success as a team leader. Reflect on your ability to communicate to managers as well as entry-level employees. Emphasize your track record of being reliable and punctual.

Your soft skills will show up in your social media posts. They’ll be reflected in your conversations. They’ll be highlighted in your references. So don’t underestimate their value.

Which skills are more important?

Hiring managers hone in on candidates by looking at hard skills. It makes sense that you wouldn’t be interviewed for an IT support position if you haven’t a clue about computers. Your career path can get you noticed. However, many employers also look for candidates with strong soft skills.

Soft skills can have you going places. Your personality, work ethic, and critical thinking skills can earn your employer’s trust. They can get you hired knowing that you’ll take the reins and learn quickly. People have risen in the ranks because of their ability to lead as well as to be a team player. Soft skills are highly important once you’re in the door.

So, we say both are important. Let people know about your hard and soft skills. Be proud of them, and let others know about all of your skills and abilities.
