CAREER CONSULTANT
JOB SUMMARY
The Career Consultant provides a variety of educational, vocational, and personal counseling services (which may include outreach, intake, assessment, counseling, educational, vocational, and technical instruction) to JTEC adult participants relative to their future employability. Designs, plans, implements, facilitates, and teaches group and individual career skills workshops. Completes the client’s applications, assesses client potential using established methods and develops a realistic training and employment plan. Monitors client’s progress and activities. Works closely with community organizations, staff, and supervision personnel to ensure a smooth flow of services to the client.
This is an in-person position, Monday thru Friday.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The Career Consultant under the general supervision of the Assistant Career Center Manager, who periodically reviews work for accuracy and compliance with agency policies and guidelines. Some instruction may be given for unusual types of assignments. Where regular duties are performed independently within policies, some latitude is expected.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
The Career Consultant provides no supervision.
MAJOR DUTIES
1. Accurately records information about work history, work and training related
issues/barriers, income and other data needed to determine eligibility and appropriateness
for services.
2. Assists clients in developing a realistic career/employment plan by reviewing client’s
educational background, test results work experience and occupational interest through the
assessment process.
3. Continues to develop and maintain clients’ career/employment plan and writes narrative
reports to document client’s progress and counseling sessions throughout enrollment and
for specified periods after termination in order to enhance and achieve job retention.
4. Plans, coordinates, facilitates, and provides individual and group workshops to participants covering a variety of personal, vocational, and educational related topics.
5. Works closely with the Staffing Executives/OJT Vendors and participates on a regular
basis as a member of the Case Management Team to follow the progress of clients seeking
employment.
6. Works with the client to develop and improve job seeking and job retention skills.
7. Responsible for managing a substantial client caseload and ensuring positive program outcomes that are in compliance with WIOA performance standards, applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
8. Responsible for ensuring that financial records are timely and accurate and maintaining
financial records as related to the client’s employment and training activities (i.e.,
contracts, financial aid, contract modifications, deobligation of funds, supportive services
and distribution of client payroll).
9. Coordinates assigned client activities with training site vendors and staff. Resolves
conflicts and client performance issues to promote successful completion of training
leading to employment.
10. Networks and maintains effective communication with community agencies and services
responsible for supportive services, gathers information and make referrals, as necessary.
11. Manages special projects and training programs as assigned to ensure their successful
implementation and completion.
12. Promotes JTEC programs through the use of media and provides informational
presentations to community agencies, services, and organizations in the public and private
sectors.
13. Performs assigned duties in a professional and businesslike manner and in accordance with JTEC policies and procedures.
14. Performs other related duties and developmental tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. Working knowledge of individual and group counseling, interviewing, screening and
assessment techniques.
2. Working knowledge of social, environmental, economic, and cultural factors affecting
disadvantaged persons.
3. Knowledge of area labor market needs, vocational training vendors, community resources and requirements for various employment opportunities.
4. Knowledge of ethical standards for counselors.
5. Knowledge of educational learning concepts and motivation techniques.
6. Ability to administer vocational assessments and interpret results.
7. Ability to teach basic, Intermediate, advanced academics and computer literacy.
8. Ability to promote JTEC in a professional and businesslike manner.
9. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with
clients, vendors, employers, and agencies.
10. Ability to conduct and Instruct clients in-group and one on one situations.
11. Ability to research and collect data.
12. Demonstrated ability to communicate with individuals from diverse socioeconomic and
multi-cultural backgrounds.
13. Demonstrated ability to design, facilitate, teach, and Implement curriculum, evaluation
systems and forms and coordinate materials to deliver workshops and classroom
instruction.
SUGGESTED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s Degree required. Three years direct related experience in counseling, i.e., guidance counselor, drug or rehabilitation counselor, or employment counselor required. Any combination of education or training which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Related teaching experience desired. Valid driver’s license and own transportation required.

Salary Range: $52,000 and $58,000.
